Step by step to setup TrueNAS Core

Once you installed the TrueNAS OS on your PC, you need to set it up so that to interact with the data storage using the Windows.

1. First you need to start a virtual machine (or PC/NAS) with installed TrueNAS OS and wait for it load.
   
2. After loading, you will see the string on the screen with the IP address which you can enter to connect to the TrueNAS over the network. Just enter the address to the address bar of the browser and get to the login screen.
   
3. Enter root to the Username field and enter the password that you set during the installation to the Password field. Once done, the network interface is displayed.
   
   
   
4. Next you need to create a new user. This user will ONLY be needed to log in to the TrueNAS on Windows. You CANNOT log in to the network interface with this user credentials. Click the Accounts -> Users -> Add and create a new user and fill the highlighted fields.
   
5. Next you need to create a storage pool. Click the Storage -> Pools -> Add -> Create Pool.
   
6. Then set the name of the pool and select the disks.
   
7. Next create a network folder, which is needed for storing data.
   
8. Then enable sharing via SMB. Go to Sharing -> Windows Resources (SMB) -> Add.
   
9. Next set access rights for the network folder. In this example we have allowed access to the shared-folder:
   • To creator of the directory (root) and to its group (wheel);
   • To Creator-owner group (owner@) and to creator group (group@);
   • For user reclaime were given full rights.
     
10. At this step we complete the setup of TrueNAS Core OS and we can access the network folder using Windows Explorer. Enter the TrueNAS address in the bar on the Network tab and press Enter.
    
11. Next, in the login window, enter the TrueNAS user data set during the setup.
    
12. After that we can interact with the network folder: upload files and folders to the TrueNAS storage.
    

Thus, we have successfully completed the setup of OS TrueNAS CORE, now we can store data on this network storage. For example, we used OS TrueNAS CORE 13.0-U3.1 installed on a VMware virtual machine. But, in case of physical installation and configuration of TrueNAS, the steps will be the same.
